Building

2011 was the year I could finally put all the ideas I have
had over the last 7 years, into my very own house by the
river.
I wanted this house to have a low impact on the environment
without it costing me the earth (so to speak) and have very small
to negligible maintenance and running costs. My main objective
was to build a small, well insulated compact house using
passive solar principles, containment of waste and
locally sourced materials and labour. The idea is
too heat the house by solar first, using the concrete floors for
passive storage, then hot water for underfloor heating, then the
fire using sustainably grown firewood on site, and then to keep the
heat in with extremely good insulation.
I also wanted it to look contemporary, modern and warm.
